Narrative Text

Narrative

Purpose:
The purpose of narrative text is to entertain people. The stories can be real or imaginary.
The structure:
A narrative text mainly consists of three parts: orientation, complications (problems) and resolution.

  • The orientation is the part where the writer of the story describes the characters (who involved in the story) and the setting (the context or situation in which the story takes place, that is where and when the story happened). In other words, the introduction answers the question ‘who’, ‘when’, and ‘where’ about the story.
  • The complication or problem is the part where the writer introduces a problem, a change in the situation, or an action that requires a response. There is usually a major complication which is the core problem that will usually lead to other complication(s) or problem(s). These parts are usually the most interesting section of the whole story.
  • The resolution is the part in which the writer presents the way the problem is resolved. The complication or problem may be resolved for better or for worse (happily or unhappily). The whole story ends in this section.
Language features:
  • Written in the first person (I, we) or the third person (he, she, they).
  • Use connectives/linking words to do with time (once upon a time, one day, then, etc.)
  • Usually writen in the past tense. Use active nouns.
  • Nouns do something (e.g. Rain splashed down.)
